(AUDIO) Taylor Swift Loves To Write In Many Forms

September 15, 2013

These days Taylor Swift chooses to express herself through through writing songs, like her current single, “Red,” but she admits she also loves to write poetry and other types of work, including writing a novel when she was just 13. The idea to write a book came about when she was on vacation one summer with her parents in Stone Harbor, NJ. “All my friends were back in Pennsylvania and so I had nothing to do. So I had this epiphany; I’m going to be a novelist and I’m gonna write novels and that’s gonna be my career path,” she explains. “So I would write different chapters of this book and send them back to my friends and I’d write them into the book under different names but totally describe their personalities. It was a really fun way to spend the summer.” The only problem with Taylor writing the novel that summer is that her parents were frustrated because she would never go outside. “I would just be locked in this little study with my computer,” says Taylor. While her career as a novelist was short-lived, Taylor says writing is and always will be her favorite thing to do because, she loves how “you can convey a thought or a story or completely describe a character or a situation through words and the whole process of editing and re-editing and rethinking and imagining. I think that that’s what I loved about writing the novel and that’s what I love about poetry and that’s what I love about songwriting.”

“I have a lot of different epiphanies. I’m always having different ideas as to like, “Ooh. You know, this would be a good idea.” One summer I was at the shore. We used to spend our summers in Stone Harbor, New Jersey and all my friends were back in Pennsylvania and so I had nothing to do. So I had this epiphany; I’m going to be a novelist and I’m gonna write novels and that’s gonna be my career path. So I would write different chapters of this book and send them back to my friends and I’d write them into the book under different names but totally describe their personalities. It was a really fun way to spend the summer. My parents were so frustrated because I would never go outside. I would just be locked in this little study with my computer. But I’ve always been a writer first. It’s my favorite thing is how you can convey a thought or a story or completely describe a character or a situation through words and the whole process of editing and re-editing and rethinking and imagining. I think that that’s what I loved about writing the novel and that’s what I love about poetry and that’s what I love about songwriting.”
